Nursery | Room Reveal

Designing our little boy’s nursery was one of my favorite parts of pregnancy and has since become my favorite room in our home!

I knew I wanted to keep this space neutral and simple. I do not love a busy, cluttered space and since I was going to be spending a lot of time in here, I wanted to make sure it was a space I enjoyed too. However, I still wanted it to feel like a little boy’s nursery and would be a space that could grow with my son! I began scouring Pinterest for some inspo.

The walls in this room were already painted a neutral gray to match the rest of our house, but I wanted to bring in some pattern and texture with an accent wall. I came across this wallpaper and the whole room’s theme was born: Golf . My husband is an avid golfer and from what we’ve been told from other parents, it’s never to early to start brainwashing your children into liking your hobbies (totally joking)!

Since this wallpaper is pretty busy, I wanted to use it sparingly as to not overwhelm the space. On the main wall, we added board and batten to the bottom 2/3rds of the wall and wallpaper to the top. We painted the board and batten a bright white to match the rest of the trim. This really helped brighten the room and even made the space appear a little bigger! Next, we wallpapered the wall where the dresser would be. This little nook is tucked behind the door and isn’t a huge wall, so it was the perfect place to add a bit more of a statement without overpowering the small room.

Then it came time to decide on furniture. If only I could add up the amount of time I spent looking for the perfect crib and rocker… I eventually decided on this crib. The black color and modern lines provided a masculine touch to our gender-neutral color palette. Plus, it matched well with this dresser from Wayfair that we already owned. As for the recliner, I had a few non-negotiables 1) it had to be extremely comfortable 2) it had to wear well and hide stains or be easy to clean. We ended up finding the perfect recliner at Nebraska Furniture Mart and let me tell you - this is by far the best purchase we made in this entire room! Not only is it comfy, but it is all power-controlled, which means no waking up a sleeping baby slamming the footrest down. It also comes with an adjustable headrest too which saved this mama’s neck while looking down during feedings. Finally, it has a port to add a phone charger on the side - a luxury, but so convenient!

Once the walls were finished and the “big-ticket” items were purchased, it was time for the details! I came across these prints on Etsy and had to have them. I loved the simple golf designs and they provided the perfect small pops of blue and green that this little boy’s room needed. We got these crib sheets in similar hues to match. We added additional lighting to the room with these black sconces, hung on either side of this round, black mirror and in our window seat nook. And the best part? We used remote-operated puck lights, so no electrical work was needed! Not only do I love the way they look, they have been so handy for late night feedings and diaper changes. This rug from Amazon is the perfect dupe for a similar rug from Pottery Barn, but at a much lower price point! We added these black shelves behind the recliner to house all of the books we got from our baby shower (10/10 recommend having people bring a book instead of a card to your baby shower!) Finally, the biggest debate of this entire room - to curtain or not to curtain? I ultimately decided the blackout curtains would come in handy for daytime naps, so we hung these long white curtains and this black rod, both from Amazon.

At last, adding the final personal touches - his name! I loved the size and boldness of the large galvanized letters from Hobby Lobby, but the metal didn’t quite match the theme of his room. Instead, we spray painted them matte black to match the rest of the black details in this room. Seeing his name on the wall made everything feel so real and completed his room!

A few helpful tips to remember when starting your nursery:

1) Less is more - Babies come with A LOT of things, so when it comes to filling the space, don’t overcrowd the room with too many big items! Stick to a few pieces that serve a purpose: 1) a place for baby to sleep 2) a place for you to sit 3) a place for storage (even better if it can double as a place to change diapers)

2) The details make the difference - Adding personal touches to your nursery goes a long way and really sets your little one’s room apart from the millions of other pictures on Pinterest. No one is going to know if you bought the trending dresser or the most expensive crib. Pick a theme that brings you joy, add the name banner or sign, hang the booties from when your husband was little. It is the little details that make it special and make it yours!

3) It is never to early to start - If you give yourself plenty of time to complete your nursery, you do not have to rush and can take your time designing, researching, planning, and completing it. With time, you are less likely to impulse buy and end up with things you don’t need or like. Also, it is really nice to have the nursery checked off your to-do list when the third trimester fatigue hits!
